How Does e-Tutor Stack Up?

The success your K-12 student has with learning will have a profound impact on all learning that follows. e-Tutor provides both support and challenge to make the learning and growing experience one of opportunity and accomplishment for students.

If this is your first time considering online learning, you no doubt have many questions about which program will most effectively provide for your student's daily learning program.

The difference between regular school and online learning

Online education represents a new kind of challenge for students. Each student's and parent's expectations differ widely, and the e-Tutor response may not always meet expectations. There are some things all students can expect. Students can expect to be challenged academically. They can expect to not understand everything they experience in an online educational program. They can expect to not always see the relevance of what they are asked to do. But, they also can expect that resources will be available to help them.

It may seem obvious, but it sometimes comes as a shock to students that online learning will require increased academic skill. Consider the following:

Traditional School e-Tutor Online Education
Attendance is required. Attendance is not enforced.
Teachers often test over clearly reviewed materials. Three forms of testing take place in each e-Tutor Lesson Module: Self Check (Problem Statement), Parent Review (Activities and Extended Learning), Quizzes and Exams are automatically scored by e-Tutor. e-Tutor emphasizes critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Students study an average of one hour per week per class. Students are expected to four lesson modules each day and to spend one to one and a half hours on each lesson module.
Weeks are full of structured activities. Possibilities for family, individual and outside involvement are endless and sometimes overwhelming.
Teachers often remind students of deadlines, overdue work, and their current grades. e-Tutor students, with parents assisting, schedule their own learning time and to monitor their own scores for quizzes and exams.
Class structure is discussed in detail at the beginning of the year. Recommended learning programs are provided for each individual student.
Teachers can usually be found in their classrooms throughout the day. e-Tutor can be contacted anytime 24/7 via email. Response is within twenty-four hours.

When not to use e-Tutor

When the student has difficulty adjusting to change and being responsible for their own actions.

The student role is one that can change and evolve as a student progresses through the curriculum levels. Starting as early as possible, students should begin to take responsibility for their learning. This means applying oneself to his or her studies in a focused and serious manner, working hard, becoming engaged in the lesson modules and activities, exploring their personal interests, improving areas of academic weaknesses and capitalizing on individual strengths.

When the student cannot apply adequate time to learning.

Students should consider that an online course requires additional time and effort. Time management is essential. Online courses are definitely more convenient and flexible, but are in some ways more demanding. Students should plan on spending twenty (20) hours a week working on their lesson modules for a full curriculum and 8-10 hours a week for a supplemental program. At a minimum, students are required to login and perform work in their online lesson modules at least five times a week, dispersed throughout the week (i.e., not five visits in one or two days.

When the student requires face to face interaction with an instructor.

The student should verify to parents their ability to pursue online learning by stating that they are:

  1. Self-directed, highly motivated, and self-disciplined.
  2. An independent learner.
  3. Able to access e-Tutor and send email.
  4. Able to manage their time wisely.
  5. Always able to finish what they start.
