Online Home School
The true impact of the Internet is just beginning to be felt in distance learning, homeschooling and tutoring. Online instruction vastly improves the access, quality and speed of information, enabling the individual to develop knowledge like never before with anytime, anywhere learning. The real value in online educational content is not in simply putting existing content online, but taking advantage of the Internet's unique attributes to create new content. The key is to change educational programming, reconsidering how knowledge is obtained and then, making use of the advantages this powerful technology offers. e-Tutor has created a program that is very different than traditional tutoring programs. Lesson modules are integrated across four broad curricular areas in Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science that are frequently integrated with related lessons. Subscribing students can access any of the lesson modules at four cross-aged levels: Primary, Intermediate, Middle/Junior High and High School any time of the day or night. Students work independently at their own pace and on their own time.
While online instruction is still in its infancy, homeschoolers are beginning to recognize its value. America's youth have embraced the computer and the Internet as their own. Half of all kids age eight or older use the computer every day and nearly 75 percent have a computer at home. Students use the Internet for information gathering, e-mail and chat. Online learning is a natural extension of their use of the Internet now and programs like e-Tutor provide focus and guidance to increase their natural need to learn. e-Tutor provides all instructional material online, immediate feedback is provided for quizzes and exams, and educators respond to e-mail from students and parents. Other programs have set times when students can communicate with teachers through chat rooms in completing their online educational programs.
For parents, computers are about education and e-Tutor wants them actively involved in their child's education. They follow through in checking the activities and extended learning included with each lesson. Results of quizzes and exams are recorded in a portfolio accessible by the parent. Portfolios offer a way for parents and students to record and celebrate growth.
A study by Benedictine University (Illinois) found that students using e-Tutor improved in reading and writing skills. The study compared e-Tutor to a basal reading program. Students in the fourth grade class who used e-Tutor out performed those students using the typical basal reading program in reading comprehension and writing skills. All e-Tutor lesson modules include strong reading components and writing activities. In addition, each lesson module includes vocabulary and resources that reinforce the concept or skill being taught in each lesson.
e-Tutor is one of several businesses focusing on the online educational market. It is independent of large publishing houses. All lesson modules are original and written by teachers from across the country creating a unique learning experience for students. Lesson modules are rich and varied reflecting the many teachers who participate in writing content for this unique program.
Unlike many other online instructional programs, e-Tutor does not require peripherals or additional material. While most students using e-Tutor do so in their homes, students have accessed the program from libraries, while on vacation, while in performing arts, while traveling around the world. e-Tutor students can be found around the world. Many military families living abroad are finding home schooling to be a valuable tool.
e-Tutor was created in 1997 with the homeschooler in mind. The program has had over 10,000 users since it was launched. Eighty-seven percent of e-Tutor subscribers are homeschooled. The program consists of over 2,300 lesson modules covering twenty-three subject areas. The program is constantly expanding as more lessons are added to the lesson library.
