Online Lessons

Unlike others in the e-learning space, which provide online curriculum, Knowledge HQ uses the power of the Internet to create a truly interactive teaching and learning experience : e-Tutor. Web-based enabling tools facilitate communication and the sense of community between educator, student and parent.

There are few other online programs that are accredited by CITA and NCA. While others may claim accreditation, a closer look will reveal the accrediting organization does not have the standing that CITA and NCA have. Accreditation means that parents and others can have confidence that e-Tutor Virtual Learning has been closely scrutinized by an outside group of educators who have found the program to have met the high standards established for outstanding educational programs.

e-Tutor Virtual Learning consists of complete lesson modules, similar to chapters, rather than just aggregated content or lesson plans. e-Tutor content can be customized by the tutor and archived in a personal filing cabinet. Included in the lesson module are quizzes and evaluation tools that provide immediate feedback on progress and are accessible by parents, students and tutors. The interactive and cumulative assessment helps customize the learning experience to the skill level of each student. This is a rigorous curriculum, which, through its extended learning exercises, challenges students in a positive and progressive learning experience.

Lesson Module Format

e-Tutor lesson modules follow a set format. Each e-Tutor lesson module consists of nine parts followed by an assessment section, which contains quizzes and an exam. The quizzes and exams are automatically scored and put into a report card with which parent have access.

  1. Introduction - a brief statement explaining the topic of the lesson.
  2. Grade Level - e-Tutor lessons are cross-aged at Primary, Intermediate, Middle/Jr. High and High School.
  3. Lesson Goals - Goals and objectives are aligned to national and state learning standards in the major subject areas.
  4. Resources - Links to quality education websites where students can find information that reinforces or expands upon the information given in the Study Guide.
  5. Lesson Problem - Setting the stage for learning by posing a question(s) to be answered in completing the lesson module. Students respond to this before and after completing the lesson module to act as a self check.
  6. Vocabulary - Enriched vocabulary words, which may be new to students, are hyper-linked to the e-Tutor Dictionary.
  7. Study Guide - The main body of each lesson module that teaches the skills and concepts that students need to be successful learners.
  8. Activities - Worksheets, experiments, projects that give the student practice in what s/he has learned from the Study Guide. Parents review these and use them as a springboard for discussion
  9. Extended Learning - Additional thought provoking activities that stimulate logical thinking, creative reasoning and critical thinking. Parents also review these.

Assessment

e-Tutor uses three forms of assessment in each lesson module:

  1. Self Assessment - Student responds in writing before and after completing the lesson module.
  2. Parent Assessment - Parent reviews Activities and Extended Learning, using them as a springboard for discussion.
  3. e-TUtor Assessment - Multiple Choice quizzes and exams are automatically scored by the program. Students can take the quiz as many times as needed; the exam once.

Application

e-Tutor is Internet-based and requires no peripherals or add-ons. The program is accessible from anywhere there is Internet access.

Course Design:

The online instructional program has been developed using eight governing goals established when e-Tutor was first created.

  1. Instructional lesson format needs to be consistent.
  2. Immediate feedback is necessary for both student and parent.
  3. Instruction should be customized to student progress.
  4. Parents need to be part of the teaching-learning process.
  5. Instruction should be linked to National and State Learning Goals.
  6. Appropriate Internet links need to be an integral part of each instructional lesson module.
  7. Instructional lessons should be available to students from grades K-12.
  8. Students should learn the value and appropriate use of the Internet while completing instructional lesson modules.

Communication

e-Tutor has a built in bulletin board/chat room capacity that tutors use when communicating with students. In addition, there are message boards and email (sending only) easily accessible within the system. Parents, as well as students, can email or phone e-Tutor staff and tutors 24/7.

Lesson Framework

Each section of the learning module (Resources, Vocabulary, Study Guide, Activities, and Extended Learning) contributes to the learning process in a unique way. These modules, interesting topics and colorful graphics, make e-Tutor effective and inviting to the student. With the use of the many valuable online educational resources, no place is more than a few mouse clicks away.

For example, in a lesson module that investigates giant pandas, the student learns about the pressing problem of saving the endangered animal by connecting to the World Wildlife Fund's website where the giant panda is one of the top ten most endangered species. The student is later linked to a map of China to study the native terrain of the pandas and to the San Diego Zoo for information about panda research. In this engaged learning environment, the students routinely take virtual field trips to every corner of the earth from the computer.

e-Tutor students are not time-stressed. e-Tutor helps students focus on learning, instead of time, by assisting the learner to manage information, by providing resources, and by being "open" 24 hours a day. In another lesson module, the student can read about a masterpiece by Edgar Allan Poe, visit the author's hometown and interact with other writers interested in Poe's work. The e-Tutor method of learning encourages students to learn by doing, simulating the real world situation.

Assessment is the final step in each e-Tutor lesson module. A bank of questions pertaining to the concept or skill of the lesson module is available at three levels of difficulty. Students who are successful in responding to all questions on an exercise will be challenged at a higher level in succeeding lessons. On the other hand, students who do not master the questions provided for an exercise will be given less challenging questions in succeeding lessons. At the conclusion of the assessment exercise, the student will be given immediate feedback about his/her performance.

Keys to success

The key to student success is engaging their interests through a wide range of topics, informational web sites and interesting activities, which creates a unique learning experience for each student. Students cannot fully complete a lesson module without going to the Internet links provided throughout the body of the Study Guide. These online connections open a wide array of possibilities for learning, not limited to the confines of the classroom. Students anticipate new discoveries that lie ahead as they proceed though each instructional lesson module.

For instance, in a Language Arts lesson module on Mark Twain's, Mississippi River, there might be a hyperlink on Mark Twain that will take the student to a biography of Mark Twain. There might be a hyperlink on the Mississippi River that will take him to demographics on the Mississippi River. The hyperlinks reinforce and extend the learning for the student providing information that may link new information to old giving him another way to recall what he has learned.

Lesson modules focus on relevant and interesting topics emphasizing basic skills. The content in the e-Tutor program applies to real-life situations that students can relate to, such as creating a budget or reviewing a movie. The visual instruction is designed to include all curricular disciplines, balance the transfer of certain basic skills and strengthen the value of education. e-Tutor students work at their own pace and focus on areas of their choice from a large selection of specific subjects. Lesson modules are searchable by topic, keywords and subject. Students become responsible parties to their own learning when using the e-Tutor Virtual Learning Program.
