e-Tutor Social Science

U.S. History - World History - Geography - Politics - Economics - Sociology

The e-Tutor Social Studies program is an integrated study that promotes civic competence. Study of the social sciences helps develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world. The curricular area includes six subjects that include content from the humanities, mathematics and natural sciences.

Each subject that makes up the social studies curriculum is offered independently, yet all overlap into each other. e-Tutor students gain a broad understanding of political and economic systems. They will gain an understanding of events, trends, personalities and movements in local, state, national and world history. They learn about local, state, national and world geography. They will understand how the concepts in social studies can help interpret human actions and prepare them for careers and lifelong learning.

By solving problems, students learn to recognize that individual decisions and actions have consequences - these consequences affect the way people, groups and nations associate with each other. e-Tutor students are asked to analyze information from a variety of sources and to solve problems through a consistent process using goals and criteria.

e-Tutor students interpret information by gathering a range of opinions and determining the best course of action. To study and draw conclusions about issues in the social sciences, students read and interpret textual and visual information, listen carefully to others, and organize and explain their own ideas using various media.

Social Studies is highly integrated with the other curricular areas. Understanding economics requires knowing mathematics; understanding geography requires knowledge of earth science. e-Tutor students learn that the connections between the subjects in social studies and their relation to other academic areas are the key to better understanding how people interact. e-Tutor students learn data collection and analysis, online and field research, opposing views and decision making - all of which are key elements to successful futures.
